Why Are United States Postal Locations Closing?

In a July 28, 2009 press release, the GAO noted that USPS infrastructure expenses and personnel costs remain high while mail volume is declining. Gene Dodaro, the head of the GAO, said “In the short term, a key challenge is to cut expenses quickly enough to offset mail volume and revenue decline to avoid running out of cash...In the long term, USPS should consider consolidating operations, closing unneeded facilities, and reducing its workforce to reflect new trends in mail use.”
